Here’s his verdict. Thanks for reading this MBM.
18h ago16.42 EDTSnippets from Arne Slot’s post-match press conference. “There were a lot of similarities between three months ago and now … we had multiple chances to score … after 10, 15 minutes you expect us to lead and then their first attack leads to a set-piece goal … last time was a penalty, now it was a set-piece goal … you play over two games against each other and now it’s half-time … they are 1-0 up … we can do better … even with the game we played we had enough chances to score goals … next week we play at Anfield and our fans will be so supportive for us … that was the situation for Galatasaray today … it was difficult for us to play in.”
Updated at 16.51 EDT18h ago16.26 EDTHopefully we’ll get some quotes from Arne Slot sooner rather than later. In the meantime, here’s Jonathan Wilson’s match report.
19h ago15.48 EDTThat was yet another underwhelming Liverpool performance. Vulnerable at the back, bordering sometimes on the shambolic, they’re very fortunate that Galatasaray spurned several good chances and promising situations. The hosts were the better side. But there are straws for Liverpool to grasp: having limited the damage to one goal, they’ll fancy their chances of turning it around at Anfield. And they can legitimately feel sore about their disallowed goal: the ball did brush Ibrahima Konaté on the arm, but then was deflected away from goal by Uğurcan Çakır, before rebounding back off Virgil van Dijk’s heel and in. Having said all that, though, was Barış Alper Yılmaz really interfering with play from an offside position for Galatasaray’s disallowed effort? Hmm. Probably best for Liverpool to conclude that this isn’t the worst result from a pretty bad night at the office. And they’ll always have, er, Istanbul.
Updated at 15.53 EDT19h ago15.40 EDTFULL TIME: Galatasaray 1-0 LiverpoolLiverpool, second best for the most part, are fortunate to get out of Dodge with just a one-goal deficit.
19h ago15.39 EDT90 min +5: Szoboszlai is booked for flapping a finger in Akgun’s face.
19h ago15.38 EDT90 min +4: The free kick’s shuttled left to right and Robertson is forced to concede a corner. Sallai wanders over to swing it in. It’s half cleared. Jakobs lashes a shot over the bar from the edge of the D. That should be that.
19h ago15.36 EDT90 min +3: Yilmaz – no longer limping quite so obviously - and Torreira are replaced by Gundogan and Elmali.
19h ago15.36 EDT90 min +2: Osimhen outbattles Konate and Gomez down the left and wins a free kick. The hosts aren’t rushing to take it.
19h ago15.35 EDT90 min +1: Gakpo looks for the bottom left from distance. A clean strike but always wide left.
19h ago15.35 EDT90 min: Sanchez is booked for leaving a hanging leg on Gomez, and he’ll miss the second leg. And so might Yilmaz, because he looks to have pulled something after a long run down the left. There will be four additional minutes.
19h ago15.33 EDT89 min: Frimpong steals the ball off Jakobs down the right. Wonderful pressing. He cuts back for Szoboszlai, who crosses for Ekitike. The striker has to hit the target from eight yards, but heads over.
19h ago15.31 EDT88 min: Gravenberch is booked for taking a handful of Singo’s shirt.
19h ago15.31 EDT86 min: Yilmaz skates past Gomez down the left. He drifts into the box, then rolls backwards for Sara, who lashes a shot into the side netting. Half of the stadium thought that was in, and celebrated accordingly. Sara then takes his leave, Boey coming on in his place.
19h ago15.28 EDT84 min: Osimhen powers his way past Frimpong on the left … then does the same number on Konate down the right. He aims for the bottom right again. Robertson deflects the shot wide right, and Mamardashvili punches the resulting corner clear.
19h ago15.27 EDT82 min: According to TNT Sports, the Liverpool goal was disallowed because the ball “hit the arm of Konate and he directly scored”. Meanwhile back in the here and now, Osimhen skelps a low shot from a tight angle on the right that Mamardashvili does well to parry. The ball breaks to Singo, whose effort from the edge of the D is terribly weak.
19h ago15.25 EDT81 min: Robertson one-twos his way down the left, Gakpo his wall. Robertson crosses low for Ekitike, but Sanchez gets in the way to divert out for a corner. Szoboszlai sends it long, and Gakpo is penalised for yanking on Jakobs’ arm.
19h ago15.23 EDT79 min: A free kick sent into the Liverpool box from the left. Torreira flashes a header wide. That’s another big miss for the hosts, who will wonder how it’s still just 1-0.
19h ago15.22 EDT78 min: Sallai and Akgun come on for Lang and Lamina.
19h ago15.22 EDT77 min: Van Dijk challenges Cakir for a high ball. It drops to Mac Allister, who can’t poke home. And neither can Van Dijk. The ball squirts over the bar, and then the whistle goes for a soft foul on the keeper. Now that decision would have been controversial had it gone in and been disallowed.
Updated at 15.35 EDT19h ago15.20 EDT75 min: Liverpool were claiming a foul on Van Dijk during that melee. They may even have had a point. But there was so much nonsense going on. Potential hand balls, fouls the other way, the lot. Ah well, here we all are. It would have been quite the story had Konate scored, too.
19h ago15.18 EDT73 min: Gakpo comes on for Wirtz, who was utterly ineffectual.
19h ago15.17 EDTNO GOAL! Galatasaray 1-0 Liverpool72 min: A long wait for VAR. The ball’s adjudged to have hit Konate on the arm, and gone in as a result. Having decided Konate was the scorer, it’s ruled out. But did it ping off Van Dijk’s heel? Hmm. It really wasn’t very clear, either way. But it’s no goal.
Updated at 15.25 EDT19h ago15.13 EDT69 min: Mac Allister rolls the ball down the inside-left channel for Szoboszlai, who earns another Liverpool corner. Szoboszlai takes it himself, and …
19h ago15.12 EDT68 min: Sara nearly splits Liverpool’s defence with a simple pass down the middle, but Gomez is on hand to intercept and put an end to Lang’s ambitions.
19h ago15.11 EDT66 min: … and now Ekitike barges his way clear down the inside-left channel, but can’t lob Cakir when one on one! The keeper flaps the ball wide left, and nothing comes of the following corner. A big chance to swing the momentum goes by.
Updated at 15.17 EDT19h ago15.09 EDT65 min: That was a very generous offside decision, because I’m not 100 percent sure Yilmaz was interfering with play. Konate gets away with the dreadful backpass, and the silent-movie pratfall.
Updated at 15.11 EDT19h ago15.08 EDTNO GOAL! Galatasaray 1-0 Liverpool63 min: Liverpool escape! Yilmaz was offside earlier in the move, and Konate gets away with a huge mistake! That was beyond farcical. The big man is enduring a total nightmare.
Updated at 15.08 EDT19h ago15.07 EDTGOAL! Galatasaray 2-0 Liverpool (Osimhen 62)Konate passes weakly back towards his own goal. Lang nips in. He barges down the inside-right channel and dinks into the centre. Konate, facing the wrong way and falling over, tries to backheel clear but only manages to farcically tee the ball up for Osimhen, who slams home!
Updated at 15.12 EDT19h ago15.05 EDT60 min: Yep. Frimpong comes on for Salah, while Robertson replaces Kerkez. Salah wanders off without expression. Journalists in the Ali Sami Yen prepare for some hot mixed-zone action.
19h ago15.03 EDT59 min: Arne Slot is preparing to send on Frimpong. This could be interesting. Salah has done absolutely nothing. Is he destined for the hook?
19h ago15.02 EDT57 min: Szoboszlai aims a curler towards the bottom right. Always wide. He had to take on the shot, though. There was nobody in green anywhere near the Gala box.
19h ago15.01 EDT56 min: Torreira pushes a pass down the left for Bardakcı, of all players, to break into the Liverpool box. The Galatasaray captain larrups a surprise shot into the side netting.
19h ago15.00 EDT55 min: Van Dijk is booked for clumsily shoving Yilmaz into touch. That’s both of Liverpool’s defenders on Yilmaz’s flank in the referee’s notepad. Danger here!
19h ago14.59 EDT54 min: Liverpool slow things down. Then suddenly Mac Allister looks long for Salah down the right. In the old days, it would be game over for Galatasaray. But the legs have gone. Jakobs mops up.
19h ago14.57 EDT52 min: Konate slaps a simple clearing header straight at Osimhen. And so begins a Galatasaray attack that ends with Lang curling dangerously from the left. Mamardashvili punches clear, solid goalkeeping under pressure from Osimhen.
19h ago14.55 EDT51 min: Liverpool are winning the territorial game right now. But at the risk of belabouring the point, they can’t get anything going in the final third. A lot of whistling from the home support, which is something.
19h ago14.54 EDT49 min: Gravenberch has the opportunity to release Salah into the box down the right, but clanks his pass straight into the nearest red and yellow shirt. Liverpool look fine in attack until they reach the final third, at which point the cogs begin to spin too much. Indecision reigns.
19h ago14.51 EDT47 min: Gomez throws long from the right. The ball’s only half cleared, and drops to Mac Allister, 12 yards out. Mac Allister drags his shot wide left. That’s two big chances, and this is much better from Liverpool already. But then they started the first half like this, too, and see how that panned out.
Updated at 15.15 EDT19h ago14.50 EDT46 min: Wirtz steals the ball in midfield and feeds Ekitike down the inside left. He shuttles the ball to Szoboszlai, who creams a shot goalwards with power. But straight at Cakir. “While Virgil Van Dijk has lost none of his positional intelligence and general skill as a defender, he is half a step slower than he was,” writes Kári Tulinius. “Konaté has to compensate for that, and mostly he succeeds. It’s in the mostlies where he ends up looking silly.”
20h ago14.48 EDTLiverpool get the game restarted. No changes. Meanwhile here’s more from Peter Oh: “Turkish delight is one of my favourite sweet treats. It’s soft, chewy, fragrant, nutty, and that dusting of powdered sugar gives it a classy and attractive appearance. In other words, the opposite of Liverpool’s performance so far. I hope chef Arne Slot can adjust his recipe for better results in the second half.”
20h ago14.42 EDTHalf-time postbag. “Thanks for the Graeme Souness reminder, probably his second greatest European hit after decking Dinamo Bucharest skipper Lica Movila at Anfield in the 1984 EC first leg semi-final” – Peadar de Burca
“Victor Osimhen with 10-15% more focus would genuinely be a Batistuta-level striker. He has so many gifts” – Christopher Faherty
“Since last year, Liverpool under Slot have deteriorated. Not sure why he should continue for another season” – Jeff Sax
“I don’t agree with the blanket criticisms of Konate. He’s got skills on the ball, usually makes the right decisions, and controls his emotions and challenges better than most of his peers” – Peter Oh
“Liverpool ‘are a complete shambles at the back. And not too hot in the midfield or up front either.’ So we are Spurs then?” – Ian Copestake
20h ago14.35 EDTHalf-time reading.
20h ago14.33 EDTHALF TIME: Galatasaray 1-0 LiverpoolLiverpool were good for the first five minutes. After that, not so much. Galatasaray could easily be one or two more goals ahead. Arne Slot has a lot of repair work to do during this break.
20h ago14.31 EDT45 min: There will be two additional first-half minutes.
20h ago14.31 EDT44 min: Gravenberch spins elegantly into space and feeds Ekitike down the inside-left channel. He stumbles over, and claims to have been fouled by Sanchez, but there wasn’t much in it. Had he managed to stay upright, he’d have been making good towards the Cim Bom box.
20h ago14.29 EDT42 min: Sara’s daisycutter nearly deflects into the path of Osimhen, six yards out. From the resulting corner, Lang fails to get a header on target. Liverpool really need to hear the half-time whistle.
20h ago14.28 EDT41 min: Ekitike has the chance to attack down the right, taking advantage of a Sanchez slip, but he opts against first a drive, then a curler. Eventually a cross is floated towards Kerkez, who heads infield for Wirtz, who cushions a weak header straight at Cakir.
20h ago14.26 EDT39 min: Gravenberch and Van Dijk do the after-you-sir thing in the centre circle, allowing Osimhen to nip in between them and race off with the ball. Nothing comes of the move, but that’s Liverpool to a T right now. They are a complete shambles at the back. And not too hot in the midfield or up front either.
20h ago14.23 EDT37 min: Mac Allister stands over a free kick on the left. Instead of sending it into the box, it’s worked wide right, where neither Salah nor Gomez are capable of beating the first man.
20h ago14.22 EDT36 min: … Cakir punches clear. Wirtz has the opportunity to shoot from the edge of the box, but tries a cute pass instead. It doesn’t come off.
20h ago14.21 EDT35 min: Yilmaz is back up and about. The resulting free kick is sent into the mixer by Lang, and easily claimed by Mamardashvili. Liverpool launch a counter, their first attack in a long while and Szoboszlai wins a corner with a cross from the left. He goes over to take the corner himself, and …
20h ago14.20 EDT33 min: Kerkez is booked for standing on the back of Yilmaz’s ankle. It’s clumsy more than malicious, but Yilmaz felt that and requires treatment. On comes the physio.
