Man United have salt rubbed in wounds as enormous 'Jadon Sancho bill' emerges

The English winger signed a five-year contract which included a 250,000-a-week salary when he arrived at Old Trafford from Borussia Dortmund half a decade ago.

Those financial agreements have seen United commit a ludicrous £138million to Sancho, according to the Mail, despite the fact he has made just 83 appearances. Loan spells elsewhere and his wages being covered has resulted in United not paying all of that triple-figure sum to Sancho.

The 25-year-old is currently in the midst of a temporary spell at Aston Villa with Unai Emery's side paying 80 per cent of his wages and a loan fee. Last season, Chelsea opted against activating the £25million obligation-to-buy clause and thus paid United a £5million penalty fee after also forking out half of his salary.

Dortmund took on his services for the remainder of the 2023/24 season and covered the bulk of his wages whilst also paying a loan fee. Though United have taken in some funds for Sancho, Sir Jim Ratcliffe revealed last year that £17million was still owed to Dortmund.

Those three temporary spells have been mixed for Sancho to say the least with his spell at Villa Park arguably encapsulating his career in England as he has looked bright but failed to regularly contribute in front of goal.

From 28 games for Villa this season, Sancho has contributed to just two goals with an assist in the Premier League and singular goal in the Europa League.

His domestic stats will remain the same this weekend however, as he is not eligible to face his parent club with Villa heading to Old Trafford to face United on Sunday afternoon.

The two teams are firmly in the race to qualify for Champions League football next season but both have been dealt setbacks recently.

Last Wednesday evening, Will Osula netted a last-gasp winner for 10-man Newcastle United to end Michael Carrick's unbeaten run in charge while Villa were heavily beaten 4-1 by Chelsea.

Carrick's side are likely to have the advantage over Villa before the weekend with Emery and Co. in France for their Europa League last-16 first leg against Lille.

No FA Cup run however, means that United will have not played for over 10 days when by the time they welcome Villa to Old Trafford.

Liverpool, Chelsea and arguably Brentford and Everton are in the race for a top-five finish and thus Champions League football with the four teams have varying fixtures this weekend.

While Liverpool host Tottenham, their Merseyside rivals Everton head to Arsenal while Chelsea take on Newcastle at Stamford Bridge and Brentford face bottom-side Wolves.
