Alan Shearer Newcastle verdict clear as Lamine Yamal escapes Barcelona ban

The La Liga giants travelled to St James' Park to face Eddie Howe's Magpies in a last-16 first leg Champions League clash, with the Toon Army making their voices heard from the outset and throughout.

While Sandro Tonali was booked 33 minutes into the encounter for pulling back Raphinha, Yamal wasn't afforded the same treatment for a blatant foul on Hall moments later.

The Spanish wonderkid was nowhere near the ball as he clashed with Hall, as Howe and Jason Tindall erupted on the sidelines as Marco Guida opted not to caution him.

Elsewhere, the crowd inside the stadium voiced their own grievances, as chants of "You're not fit to referee," echoed around the Gallowgate.

Meanwhile, club legend Shearer - on co-commentary duties for Amazon Prime Video - was heard saying: "Maybe it wasn't the line in the sand we thought then," referring to a fiery battle between the winger and the fullback.

A yellow card would ultimately see Yamal miss next week's reverse fixture at the Camp Nou, but as things stand, the 18-year-old will be available for selection should he keep his nose clean in the second 45.

Having already met in the league stages of the Champions League this season, United headed into the match with hopes of atoning for a disappointing 2-1 loss on Tyneside in September.

During that match, Marcus Rashford proved to be a particular thorn in the side of Howe's squad, bagging a brace for the evening to cancel out Anthony Gordon's late strike.

Up next for the Magpies is a trip to Stamford Bridge to face Chelsea on Saturday, March 14.

With just nine Premier League matches remaining, Newcastle United will have to be perfect should they hope to qualify for European football in 2026/27, given they currently sit 12th in the table, nine points adrift of the top five.

Following Saturday's clash, Newcastle travel to the Camp Nou to take on Barcelona in the second leg fixture of their round of 16 encounter, with hopes of breaking into the quarter finals of Europe's most prestigious footballing competition.
