James Morrison says West Bromwich Albion must believe they can beat anyone

West Bromwich Albion head coach James Morrison says he wants his relegation-threatened squad to have the mentality that "they can win every game" they play for the rest of the season.

The Baggies picked up their first point under Morrison since the former Albion midfielder replaced Eric Ramsay on an initial interim basis on 24 February, at Sheffield United on Saturday.

The 1-1 draw lifted Albion out of the Championship relegation zone as they prepare to host in-form Southampton on Wednesday [19:45 GMT].

"I've been asking for a positive result to get us the ball rolling and we got it on Saturday," Morrison told BBC Radio WM.

"So it's up to us to back it up andcrucially we're going to need our home form to be good."

Published26 FebruaryMorrison's first game in temporary charge, before he was given the job until the end of the season, was a disappointing defeat by fellow strugglers Oxford United - a result he called "unacceptable".

He also took the potentially risky step of criticising some of his players afterwards and said his squad looked 'mentally fragile'.

But he said that message has now hit home and he is seeing a positive response.

"I shouldn't really have to be critical to get that," Morrison said.

"I think they know that now going forward, so training's been good again, but it's not about the training, it's about what we do on a matchday.

"We're at home, so it's up to us to put a positive performance on, build on that, and when the chances come we're ruthless and we give ourselves the best chance to stay in the game."

Southampton head to The Hawthorns on a 10-game unbeaten run in all competitions and fresh from knocking Premier League Fulham out of the FA Cup.

Tonda Eckert's Saints are also eyeing a play-off spot and are only four points adrift of the top six as they face an Albion side that have not won at home since 29 December.

Morrison says Southampton's confidence "will be high" but has challenged his players to believe they can beat anyone in the league.

"We're treating every game that comes now as one we can win and to challenge them," he said.

"We've got to think of backing the result up with a positive one. So we're ready. We are keeping the mood good so they're not always thinking about the outside noise - concentrate on the group in here and when it's game time we're focused.

"We've got to get the ball rolling. And that's what I've been saying since Saturday [to] back it up again and back it up again, [with] positive performances.

"A big focus is on getting this home form good again, because there's no better place than when The Hawthorns is bouncing, and it's up to us to make that again.

"I've been put in this role and you've got to step up. That's how I see it.

"I'm going to stick my chest out and I'm going to do the best I possibly can and as long as I can put my head on the pillow, I've done everything I can, that'll do me."
