Still points to missed chances and second-half mistakes after Hillsborough draw

Watford Observer · By Adam Drury

Ed Still was left "massively disappointed" after Watford were held to a 1-1 draw at already-relegated Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough.

Still pointed to the chances his side missed during a fast start to the game as crucial – Luca Kjerrumgaard and Edo Kayembe going closest – but also acknowledged that their second-half performance offered little of the same promise, highlighting too many mistakes in possession and a loss of composure.

The stilted final-third play gave the Owls plenty of encouragement and Vivaldo Semedo's equaliser came a little out of the blue, though Still praised the spirit his team showed to keep going.

In the end, though, he was left to reflect on a frustrating night.

He said: "I'm massively disappointed.

"We've created some fantastic opportunities in the first half, which we've been doing well in the previous games to take.

"We started really well again and it felt like there were four of five big chances in the first half and we didn't take them.

"The injury to [Jeremy] Petris put a halt to the positive flow we had going. It's disappointing and unlucky to get that injury but you've got to reshuffle to find a different balance.

"We've come out in the second half and we haven't been stable enough in our performance, to keep pushing, and we've kind of opened up maybe a little bit too much.

"We've given away a few huge chances to them and it's really frustrating because that game was there to be won with the number of chances created.

"We're disappointed not to have done but you can easily walk away from here with nothing.

"They [Wednesday] have put in a really good performance and it could be a vital point."

The poor in-possession play meant the Hornets were rarely close to scoring in the second half until Semedo's equaliser but the head coach did not believe it was for a lack of intent, instead suggesting that their failure was rushing thing things too much and playing into Wednesday's traps.

Still said: "When that happens (the missed chances) you need to stay calm and keep staying in the game as long as possible.

"That was one of the things that would have made the difference between a point and winning it.

"We made small mistakes in possession, were a little bit too slow in possession, and played into their pressing, passing where they wanted us to.

"That's given them those transitions, which gives the energy to the other team and to the crowd. Then they've created their chances and the goal from those transitions.

"We need to learn as a team how to keep that control in possession and how not to be passing backwards, to have forward passes, when you come up against that defensive block."

With Wrexham losing to Hull City, the gap to sixth place is actually smaller now than it was before the game.

Asked whether he felt the draw was a missed opportunity, though, Still was not so sure.

He said: "I don't know, to be honest.

"It's one of those where we'll take stock, analyse the game, and take what we need to take from it.

"The tables will be drawn up and looked at come the end of the season. In between time, we're picking up as many points as we can.

"We've had enough chances to win here, that's for sure."
